I figure the wives are on Etsy

There’s a history here.  It’s Superbowl Sunday 2009.  I’m watching the game over at a friend’s house on the big screen.  All the football fans are there, bowls of chips, boxes of pizza, cold beer.  At halftime, David pulls out his computer.

Steelers“Are you online?” I ask.
“Yeah…working my Etsy site.” he replies.
“Etsy? The arts and crafts website?  Now?”
“I figure all the men are watching the game, so what are the wives doing?  They’re on Etsy buying stuff.  I’m renewing my prints, bringing them up to the front of the list so they sell… watch…”

And before the third quarter was over, David showed me his process. How renewing an item brought it to the top of recent listings.  How the view count increased as people clicked through to the item’s page. And, by golly, several new sales came in.

“This is amazing!”
“Yeah, I’ve been selling more and more stuff on Etsy.  Mainly small prints, but a few bigger things, even a couple original oil paintings.  You should get your work on here.”

And thus the seed was planted.  Etsy.  Could this be the answer to making a living as an artist?

I made a note to check into the system.  Soon.
